Historical Normandy
On June 6, 1944, more than 100,000 Allied troops, including 73,000 Americans, landed on the beaches of Normandy from bases in England, during the largest amphibious assault the world had ever seen. D-Day marked the beginning of the defeat of Germany and the end of World War II. Pay homage to these heroes, thousands of whom gave their lives, in 2014, the 70th anniversary of D-Day. This short break brings you from Paris to Caen, Bayeux and the Landing Beaches themselves.

Avanti Destinations: Historical NormandyDay 1 Normandy

Depart early from Paris by train (1st class tickets included). You'll be met at the Caen station 2 hours later and start on an all-day tour with an English-speaking guide.

Dedicated to peace and built on a plateau named after General Eisenhower, the Caen Memorial includes models of World War II bunkers, battleships and battlefields, as well as a real RAF plane and artifacts from the French Resistance. Exhibits trace the rise of fascism and the horror of the Holocaust. Split-screen video presentations show footage of D-Day from both the Allied and German perspectives. A new wing built in 2002 houses displays on the Cold War, the development of the atomic bomb, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the attacks of September 11, 2001. The Caen Memorial was the first museum outside the U.S. to display artifacts from 9/11.

After lunch at the memorial, spend the afternoon visiting the D-Day landing beaches with your guide. The movies you saw at the Caen Memorial will replay in your mind as you view Omaha and Utah beaches. Imagine the terror of jumping out of landing craft into the water and facing heavy German artillery. Included is an illustrated handbook to remember the Longest Day and pass on the story to others. Transfer to your hotel in Bayeux, the first French city liberated by the Allies for the night.

Centrally Located Hotel In Normandy, (L) Day 2 Normandy

In contrast to Caen, devastated during WWII, Bayeux was virtually untouched. After breakfast, you are free to spend the day exploring the beautifully preserved medieval buildings and cathedral where the famous Bayeux Tapestry was thought to originally hang in the 11th-Century when the cathedral was first dedicated.

Still brilliantly colored after more than 900 years, the Bayeux Tapestry tells the story of the Norman invasion of England and the victory of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in a form easily understood by an illiterate medieval public. Included are admission and an audio tour of the Tapestry, now housed in an impressive 18th century building. You can also visit the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, set behind massive guns. Admission and an audio tour of the museum are also included.

If you want to consider adding another night in Bayeux, the town offers more to tempt the WWII buff. The largest cemetery for British soldiers killed during the war, more than 4,000, is here. There is also a memorial to all journalists killed covering combat, from 1944 to 2007.

Transfer by taxi to the rail station and contine on to your next Avanti destination!
